Then you relate that to yourself and reward her for putting something personal out there by complimenting her for it.

Her: I traveled to Thailand for a semester after I finished college.
You: Oh really? What was that like?
Her: Oh it was amazing! I was there teaching English. And the food! It is so delicious.
You: Wow! You went to a completely foreign country to teach English and learn about their culture. I once volunteered to help do some garden work at the Japanese garden once and it taught me a lot about traditional Japanese culture [the relate]. You must be pretty brave though, going to a country where they don’t speak English and somehow finding a way to get by. I like that about you [the reward].
